Admission Requirements
Admissions Guidelines for Adult Evening Programs at Nassau BOCES
Students must safely and effectively meet, with or without reasonable accommodations, the below guidelines for each listed program.
 
For Auto Collision, Auto Mechanics:
• Courses are taught in English. Students must be able to read, write and follow directions at a 9th grade or above level and possess strong math skills.
• Student is required to perform fine and gross motor skills including but not limited to; small muscle control, manual dexterity, lifting, pushing and pulling (100lbs), standing in one place for long periods of time, bending and stretching. Must also possess eye/hand coordination and spatial abilities.
• Students must possess the ability to problem solve, measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments.
• Students must be able to have full use of senses- vision, hearing, touch and smell; normal or device corrected. Students also must be able to distinguish color and shape.
• Once employed, all trade students may be subject to background checks and drug screening. For union apprenticeships, students must possess a H.S diploma or GED.
• Students must possess a clean and current NYS driver’s license.
 
For Blueprint Reading:
• Courses are taught in English. Students must be able to read, write and follow directions at a 9th grade or above level and possess strong math skills.
• Student is required to perform fine motor skills including but not limited to; small muscle control, manual dexterity, bending at the waist, stretching, sitting and standing in place for long periods of time. Must also possess eye/hand coordination and spatial abilities.
• Students must possess the ability to problem solve, measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments.
• Students must have the sense of – vision and touch, normal or devise corrected. Students also must be able to distinguish color and shape.
• Once employed, all trade students may be subject to background checks and drug screening. For union apprenticeships, students must possess a H.S diploma or GED.
 
For Computer Technologies, Heating Systems Service, HVRAC, Plumbing, Trade Electric, Welding:
• Courses are taught in English. Students must be able to read, write and follow directions at a 9th grade or above level and possess strong math skills.
• Student is required to perform fine and gross motor skills including but not limited to; small muscle control, manual dexterity, lifting, pushing and pulling (100lbs), standing in one place for long periods of time, bending and stretching. Must also possess eye/hand coordination and spatial abilities.
• Students must possess the ability to problem solve, measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments.

For Culinary:
• Courses are taught in English. Students must be able to read, write and follow directions at a 9th grade or above level and possess strong math skills.
• Student is required to perform fine and gross motor skills including but not limited to; small muscle control, manual dexterity (knife skills), lifting, pushing and pulling (100lbs), standing in one place for long periods of time, bending and stretching. Must also possess eye/hand coordination and spatial abilities.
• Students must possess the ability to problem solve, measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments.
• Students must be able to have full use of senses- vision, hearing, touch and smell; normal or device corrected. Students also must be able to distinguish color and shape.
• Students must be able to physically maneuver in a professional kitchen and dining room and have no life threatening allergies to foods.
• Once employed, all trade students may be subject to background checks and drug screening.
 
For Licensing & Certification Courses in Cosmetology & Security Guard:
• Courses are taught in English. Students must be able to read, write and follow directions in English at a 9th grade or above level and possess strong math skills.
• Students must possess the ability to problem solve, measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments.
• Students must be able to have full use of senses- vision, hearing, touch and smell; normal or device corrected. Students also must be able to distinguish color and shape.
• Students must posses strong fine and gross motor skills, finger dexterity and be able to stand, bend and stretch for extended periods of time.
• Have good oral and written communication skills and effective listening and interpersonal skills
• The student must be emotionally stabile and flexible with the ability to express empathy, think rationally in emergency situations, maintain confidentiality, accept constructive criticism, be well organized, multitask and demonstrate long and short term memory.
• Students must have a H.S diploma, GED or Foreign diploma and once employed, may be subject to background checks and drug screening.
For Cosmetology, students must work with chemicals and skin care products, not be prone to psoriasis, dermatitis, other skin disease and/or allergies to chemical vapors.
For Security Guard, applicants must be 18 years of age, complete the 8-hour pre-service training course, and have not been convicted of a serioius criminal offense.  Must be a citizen or resident alien of the United States.
 
For Health Related Courses in, CNA, Dental Assistant, EKG Tech, Hemodialysis Tech, Medical Assistant, Medical Coding, Medical Billing/Mgr., Medical Terminology, Personal Trainer, Pharmacy Tech and Phlebotomy Tech:
• Courses are taught in English; students must be able to read, write and follow directions at a 9th grade or above level and possess strong math skills. Pharmacy Tech requires 10th grade reading and math level.   Pharmacy Tech also requires a knowledge of keyboarding and basic computer literacy skills.
• Students must possess the ability to communicate effectively in English in both oral and written formats. This is necessary to obtain a patients history, document symptoms, explain treatment procedures, read and interpret lab reports and communicate with other medical professionals.
• Students must have a H.S diploma, GED or Foreign diploma (exception: Personal Trainer) and once employed, may be subject to background checks and drug screening.
• Students must be able to observe all aspects of patient care through use of vision, hearing, touch and smell. These duties include but are not limited to; monitoring patient’s vital signs, recording information, palpation of pulse, distinguishing color, shape and odor, understand patient requests and assisting and understanding other medical professionals.
• The student is required to perform gross and fine motor skills, possess physical strength and stamina to provide safe patient care using hand, eye, foot and body coordination. These duties include but are not limited to; grasping, pinching, holding, lifting, pushing, pulling, operation of beds, chairs, tables, scales and other equipment, transferring patients up to 150 lbs. and emergency response.
• Students must possess the ability to problem solve, measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments.
• The student must be emotionally stable and flexible with the ability to express empathy, think rationally in emergency situations, maintain confidentiality and accept constructive criticism.
• The student must be able to be organized, work on multiple tasks and respond to crisis situations.
. CNA - New York State requires that student have no prior conviction or misdemeanor or felony in any state or country.  This will disqualify student from taking the New York State Certification Exam.
 
For Veterinary Assistant:
• Courses are taught in English; students must be able to read, write and follow directions at a 9th grade or above level and possess good math skills.
• Students must possess the ability to communicate effectively in English in both oral and written formats. This is necessary to obtain the animal’s medical history, document symptoms, explain treatment procedures to the pet owner, read and interpret lab reports and communicate with other medical professionals.
• Students must have a H.S diploma, GED or Foreign diploma and once employed, may be subject to background checks and drug screening.
• Students must be able to observe all aspects of animal care through use of vision, hearing, touch and smell. These duties include but are not limited to; monitoring animal’s vital signs, recording information, palpation of pulse, distinguishing color, shape and odor, understand animal owner’s requests and assisting and understanding other veterinary and medical professionals.

For Pet Grooming:
• Courses are taught in English; students must be able to read, write and follow directions.
• Students must possess the ability to communicate effectively in English in both oral and written formats.
• When employed, students may be subject to background checks and drug screening.
• Students must be able to observe an animal’s condition through use of vision, hearing, touch and smell. These duties include but are not limited to recording information, distinguishing color, shape and odor, understand the animal owner’s requests and assist other medical professionals.
• The student is required to perform gross and fine motor skills, possess physical strength and stamina to provide safe animal care using hand, eye, foot and body coordination. These duties include but are not limited to; grasping, pinching, holding, lifting, pushing, pulling, operation of tables, scales and other equipment, transferring animals up to 150 lbs. and emergency response.
• Students must possess the ability to measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments.
• The student must be emotionally stabile and flexible with the ability to express empathy, think and react rationally in emergency situations and accept constructive criticism.
• The student must be able to be organized and work on multiple tasks.
